THe moors occupy the most elevated land in the district. They reach their highest point of 1,489 feet at Urra Moor on the Cleveland escarpment, the most rugged and loftiest of all the escarpments in North-East Yorkshire.

The origins of the Face Stone on Urra Moor are unknown. There has been some speculation as to whether this carving dates back to the Iron Age, this is highly unlikely, a number of Celtic head carvings have been found throughout the north of England but this stone does not bear any resemblence to any known examples . All we can say is that the stone is not a recent carving as it is recorded in the earliest perambulations of the Feversham/Duncombe estates (1642).
