Pareidolia – The Wainstones

The Wainstones are a jumble of weather-worn Middle Jurassic sandstone columns and boulders on the western slopes of Hasty Bank. The name may originate from the Anglo Saxon word wanian, to howl. The stones are popular with climbers, the outcrop pictured below is known as The Sphinx.

    • Thanks, the Wainstones are worth a visit, they are a mile or so from the road and bang on the Cleveland Way so are fairly easy to get to. There are also prehistoric rocks carvings below the stones in Garfitts Gap.
