In 1923 the firm of Brunner Mond was established at Billingham to manufacture fertilisers. In 1926 the company was amalgamated with a number of other companies in order to form Imperial Chemicals Industries Ltd. Their factory at Billingham was to become the largest of its kind in the commonwealth. During the 1920’s Aldous Huxley worked for Brunner Mond and hailed Billingham as “an ordered universe in a world of planless incoherence” (Preface to modern edition of “Brave New World”).
