There are a number of carved stone heads in Exchange Place. These heads once decorated the facade of the Royal Exchange building. This beautiful building was built in 1868 and was demolished in 1985 to make way for the A66. During the nineteenth century Middlesbrough was so dominant in the production of iron that the world price of iron was set on this very site.
