The Old River Tees.

The Old River Tees.

In 1831 the new cut in the river was completed. The cut was made to remove the huge meanders that were hindering the port of Stockton’s trade in whale oil from the Greenland fisheries.
Gangs of men used to be employed to drag or ‘rack’ the ships around the meandering bends. After work these gangs of men would drink in a tavern known locally as the Flaming Stump.
