‘I was gobsmacked by Middlesbrough,” says Iain Sinclair, who is sitting in his local east London bistro recounting a recent trip to the north of England. “The main town square is really striking, like the old East Germany, with these decaying low-level bureaucratic buildings. I got really excited by it.”
